Soldier Jailed 40 Years for Shooting Four in Gulu.

The General Court Martial has convicted to sixty years in prison a Uganda People`s Defense Force-UPDF officer for shooting dead three people in Gulu and injuring another.
Lance Corporal Geoffrey Odaga attached to the Forth Division Army Barracks in Gulu shot dead Richard Denis Ocen the Gulu district Democratic Party mobilizer and two revelers identified as Sunday Ouma and Fred Yasin. Jimmy Ojok escaped with injuries.
The incident occurred from within and outside Smiling Panda bar in Kabedo Opong parish in Bardege division in Gulu municipality on the night of Friday 3rd August 2018.
He was then charged with three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
The General court Martial chaired by Lt. Gen Andrew Guti on Wednesday started trying Odaga of the charges from Gulu district council hall and consequently on Saturday 11th August 2018 jailed him for 40 years on his own plea of guilt.
Lt. Gen. Guti convicted the accused to 40 years for each count of murder, 40 years for aggravated robbery and 20 years for attempted murder saying the sentence will run concurrently.
Guti deducted six days from the sentence saying that Odaga had served on remand, the convict will now spend 39 years and 359 days in jail.
Dolly Aber a cashier at the bar who testified against said Odaga also robbed 61,000 Shs, a bag and a mobile phone from the bar. Court similarly ordered that the items be returned to the deceased relatives.
On the other hand statement of the Forth Division Army Barracks Spokesperson, Brigadier Emmanuel Kanyesigye said Odaga has no criminal record for the last 17 years he has served in the army.
