Spying in Newsroom Posing Fears Among Journalists.

Journalists in Gulu have expressed fears of fellow journalists who spy over their colleagues in the newsroom.
The journalists said most media houses especially the news departments of today have been infiltrated by bad elements that camouflage as practitioners only to watch over their colleagues` works and later report to security agencies.
The concern was raised on Friday from the Northern Uganda Media Club-NUMEC where journalists were debating with stakeholders over media freedom to mark the World Press Freedom Day 2019.
Arthur Okot, the news editor at Mega Fm says sometimes journalists work under fear of being monitored by security and government agencies by people who they have planted in different media houses.
Without disclosing the media houses, Justine Obol Simpleman the Gulu district secretary for community based service say he has learnt with shock of spies among several media houses in Gulu.
Obol who is also the Gulu district Secretary for Publicity for Democratic Party fears that such impersonators are planted by security agencies.
Charles Akena, an administrator at NUMEC explained that having a newsroom with spies intimidates journalists and affects their dissemination of information that affects the people.
Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu LCV Chairperson who was formerly a talk show host and presenter at Choice Fm said he learnt with shock that his former news editor who he identified as Francis Ogweng was a police officer.
Ojara noted that news reporters at his station were severally summoned by security officers even before a story goes on air.
But Gulu Resident District Commissioner-RDC, Major Santos Okot Lapolo who was guest at the event urged the journalists to stick to their ethics as the only way to set them free.
WPFD 2019 was celebrated under the theme media and democracy, in Kampala journalists under their umbrella Uganda Journalists Association-UJA demanded for protection from government.
