First Acholi Leadership Conference on Post War Recovery in Offing in Omoro.

The first Acholi leadership conference on the post Lord`s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency recovery is underway in Omoro district.
The annual event is being championed by Acholi clerics under the Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative (ARLPI) under the theme ‘’Enoba Omoro’’, translated as ‘’Attention Omoro’’.
It will later be rolled out in the other seven Acholi Sub Region districts of Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya, Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo and Agago in the consequent years respectively.
It seeks to address problems which are affecting the Acholi community ten years after guns of the LRA rebel group felt silent.
Bishop Onono Ongweng, the ARLPI Chairperson said in an interview on Friday that there is still alarming poverty and poor quality education in Acholi Sub Region ten years even after peace has returned.
Onono explained that the pilot conference will be launched from ARLPI offices in Omoro district on 7th October this year.
He says the issues to be addressed will include the roles of leaders in promoting sustainable development, education, household income, eradicating poverty and promoting environmental protection.
Onono further explained that Acholi benefited from several assistances from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) and government after the war but they are still stuck in poverty and poor quality education.
He added that Omoro was chosen to host the first conference being the youngest district in the Sub Region which needs urgent attention towards its development.
Michael Ogenrwot, the ARPLI Legal Officer said the pilot conference will draw 33 political leaders and five opinion leaders from Omoro and 10 religious leaders under ARLPI.
Onono disclosed that the initiative rose from a mini-survey conducted by ARLPI over the years which discovered that there is low level of education in Acholi Sub Region something which has contributed to poverty and low standards of livelihoods.
This he has equally on the increase in the numbers of street children in Acholi Sub Region related to child neglect by the victims of the insurgency.
Gilbert Olanya, the Acholi Parliamentary Group General secretary has welcome the idea saying it is a good move to developing Acholi Sub Region.
