Police in Nwoya district have arrested their own officer for firing live bullets at a crowd.

Corporal Moses Mureeba deployed to protect land belonging to one Amelio Pogi was arrested on Tuesday evening from Alingiri village in Lungulu sub county Nwoya district after firing several bullets at a congregation in Alingiri community church.

Denis Atube the Lungulu sub county chairperson says Corp. Mureeba stormed the church drunk while wearing  the Uganda People`s Defense Forces (UPDF) army uniform and asked the congregation that he want to lead prayers.

He was however forced to leave the church shortly when the congregation noticed that he was drunk and talking nonsense.  Mureeba later went back and returned with a gun which he started firing shortly at the crowd and burn the church.

Atube estimates that the officer fired over 21 bullets because his magazine was left with only three bullets. Mureeba was however discharged by one of the locals who dived and disarmed him. He was then arrested and dragged to the Anaka town council police post in Nwoya district.

The Aswa river region police public relations officer Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the incidence. He says Corp. Mureeba is one of their officers and is under custody where charges of arson and going in public while armed with no clear reasons has been preferred against him.

Okema notes that the accused file will soon be forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for sanctioning.
